Besides
the lake itself, there are many other reasons why the Lake Cumberland
area is such an attractive place to call home.
Examples of nearby natural attractions are Cumberland
Falls, home to the moonbow, one of only two in the world,
or Big
South Fork National Recreation Area, featuring whitewater
rafting, miles of hiking paths and horseback trails, a steam
locomotive excursion, or an authentic coal mining community.
For the historian, the Mill
Springs Battlefield, a historically preserved Civil War
battlefield, is considered by many a major turning point of the Civil
War. Reenactments are
frequently conducted on the actual battlefield. The
golf lover will be pleased with the golfing options available, such as
the new championship course on General
Burnside Island.
Somerset,
the largest city in the Lake Cumberland area, is a growing, diverse
community. Many medical
facilities are located here, creating the medical hub for the entire
region. These facilities
work in conjunction with Lake
Cumberland Regional Hospital. Culturally,
Somerset is very progressive. It
is home to The
Center for Rural Development, where concerts, ballets,
Broadway musicals, and renowned artists are all part of its itinerary.
Annually, Somerset is host to the Master Musicians Festival,
featuring highly trained musicians from around the world.
Also, each year our local morning Rotary Club hosts an
International Dinner, with local residents preparing authentic foods
of their nationality, which represents over 20 countries, amazing for
a city of this size. The
Carnegie Community Arts Center and a state of the art public library
are located in downtown Somerset.
And for the young and young at heart, the Somerset
Water Park is a major summertime attraction.
